This morning, 5 July 2025, we have all woken up to the news that the conservatives are out, and Labour has won the UK general election.
From the manifesto presented by Labour, it is expected that significant employment reforms will be made now that Labour are in charge. So, what changes can we expect to be brought in?
- Day one right not to be unfairly dismissed.
- Restrictions on ‘fire and rehire’.
- Thresholds for redundancy consultation.
- Outsourcing/TUPE.
- Ban on ‘exploitative’ zero hours contracts, and right to an average-hours contract.
- Right to reasonable notice of work schedules and wages for shifts cancelled at short notice.
- Flexible working by default.
- Right to disconnect.
- Rights for the self-employed.
- Ban on unpaid internships.
- Statutory Sick Pay Reforms.
It should be noted that some of the changes proposed by Labour in their manifesto have already been introduced and they promise to keep the changes made by the conservatives in place, for example, paid carer’s leave, Tips Act and Flexible Working.
At present, we cannot confirm when these changes will come in, or if they will ever come in. However, we will ensure to keep you updated.
